What is the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica?

The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and/or Portuguese, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). It was formally organized as the Spanish National Honor Society in 1953. The name was changed to Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica in 1959. At present there are over 2,000 national and international chapters.

What is the purpose of the Society?

The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a  continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.

What are the ELHS Spanish Honor Society membership requirements?

Student must be a sophomore, junior or senior. Must maintain a 3.5 GPA in Spanish (high school) and a 3.0 (unweighted) overall GPA to remain a member in good standing.
​Must have no disciplinary records or issues.
New members who don't meet the grade requirements will not be inducted into the Society.
Returning members who don't meet the grade requirements will be dismissed from the Society.
A student in good standing must be enrolled in Spanish 3 or higher.           
Members must continue to be enrolled in a Spanish class each year to be in Spanish Honor Society unless they have already finished AP Spanish Language or the highest level offered.
All members must earn at least 10 points per year and must volunteer for after school tutoring at least 2 hours per semester (TUTORING SUSPENDED THIS YEAR DUE TO COVID-19).
Participation in fund raising activities is required.  (FUNDRAISERS SUSPENDED THIS YEAR DUE TO COVID-19).
Qualifying students will be tapped in their Spanish class.
